In general, a group investment plan is where a business sets up an investment plan for each employee and contributes on each participating employee’s behalf. The investment vehicle is typically a RRSP or TFSA product, but there are other plan types that use different types of investment products. The business sets up and administers the accounts, deciding which funds to invest in and contributing on a regular basis – usually a percentage of the employees annual salary.

Each employee owns their account and should include it as part of their broader investment portfolio. When the employee leaves the business they retain ownership of the investment account, but the business stops making contributions.
